THE SHADOW OF THE ALMIGHTY

I have found prayerful meditation and reading on the Trinity most rewarding to my heart.  This book is a first rate theological introduction to the New Testament references to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.  It has an explanatory foreword and then four chapters.  The first is entitled ‘The Story Thus Far” followed by “The Promising Father”, “The Prodigious Son”, and finally “The Powerful and Prophetic Spirit”.  Remember, this is a small theological book.  It is not meant to be a devotional, but the results of a careful reading of it will encourage a deep devotional response.  The main value of the chapters lies in the way they explore the biblical references to God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  The book is not long having only one hundred and forty five pages.  There are some unusual discoveries to be made in the fruitful way it examines various references to the Godhead in the relations that they have to one another.  A reaffirmation of the fact of God as Father is present in the book, against the ‘father/mother’ language favored in some quarters nowadays.  This affirmation is quite without bias of any kind.  One of the strengths of the book is to show the way the early Christians came to understand God and that their developing Trinitarian understanding did not conflict with the Old Testament revelation of God as ‘the One Lord’ but emerged out of that knowledge of God possessed by the faithful of Israel.  A number of the New Testament texts are examined with reasonable thoroughness and show the wonderful development and correlation that the New has with the Former testament.  Although there is not a great deal of practical application in the book we can receive and apply the light revealed of our God in this book to our own lives as we read.  There are questions at the end of each chapter and these are helpful to concentrate our thought and supply a means to begin deeper study of God.  What does knowing God as Father mean to us?  What about knowing Him as the Son and the Spirit?  The implications for the human soul, of living in deepening fellowship with the Holy Trinity are profound.  Perhaps this is a book for those with some background in theological reading but for the seeking heart it can be a primer in the study of the ‘God’ language of the New Testament.
