This book contains six short stories originally written by Annie Fellowes Johnson. They appeared in series of girl’s books known as The Little Colonel series. Julia Duin was introduced to them first by her mother when she was a little girl and they captivated her so much so that she has re-written them for young teenagers of today. Six Medieval Tales of Virtue and Valor says the title page and this is exactly what they are. They were earlier published under the title of Waiting for True Love and that particular edition is to be preferred. Duin heads each story by a verse of scripture indicating the dominant them of the tale. These kinds of stories, set in various parts of the world are intended to capture the reader and instill a sense of wonder and be a vehicle of wisdom. These short stories are replete with spiritual messages such as purity before marriage, patience in adversity, faithfulness in times of trouble, and courage in despair, these are just a few of the virtues displayed in these little classics. Mothers and fathers would do well to obtain a copy of this and read it to and with their sons and daughters. Still children love such stories and it will assist them in not being so gripped and enslaved to the TV, computer and movies. Wise are those parents who introduce such books to their family. Elsewhere I have mentioned that Duin (pronounced Deen) is a Christian journalist of much experience in her field and as a lover of the Lord Jesus. She has been interested in vintage children’s literature for many years. The original Little Colonel series of books are still available, but only second hand and at quite a cost.
