DESIGN FOR CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE

As far as I am aware this book was first published in 1959, reissued in paperback in 1971 followed by several further printings. It is freely available second hand through Amazon or Abebooks and cheaply too. If you bear in mind that it was written in the 1950’s and that means some could consider its style rather dated it probably remains one of the best books written on Christian Marriage. I certainly have read nothing better. Actually it covers a number of vital areas and begins with several chapters on the central elements of Christian marriage followed by problems in Christian courtship. There are important areas covered such as the place of sex, family planning and adoption, the overcoming of crises and combating of inner loneliness as well as the vital areas of the attainment of mutual love, trust and commitment within marriage. For those who are younger clear sections on how to tell the difference between love and infatuation, the role of dating and what the American’s call ‘petting’ are covered most helpfully. This is a book that parents of teenagers will benefit from reading and those who go through it will be instructed in all these areas although they may not agree with every emphasis. It is for those who plan on marriage, will be married and those who are married and plan on staying that way! It deals with the aspects of the social, moral, spiritual and sexual in courtship and marriage and does so in a thoughtful, biblical and authoritative manner. The book is filled with common sense principles that will lead toward a richer, more fulfilling union. What I liked about the book in particular was the blend of common sense and Biblical truth. Many books on marriage tend to major only on the physical aspects and this one brings out abiding counsel on both the physical and psychological parts. For those who want to read a book that does not sensationalize the subject matter, is not seeking to be flashy and attention grabbing, those seeking a truly Biblical examination of these matters this book can scarcely be bettered. Bear in mind, as I have said, that it was written fifty years ago and also with an American readership in mind. Still, let that not deter you from getting it and going through it, maybe several times.
