As you can guess, this book was first published before 2014, in fact, in 2010.  Written by an academic from Magdalene College Cambridge it is a thought provoking read, packing a lot into the space of about 160 pages.  It is not a book written from a Christian perspective, rather it is the thesis of a man mining the various writers of past centuries, Hegel, Kant and Freud among others and examining where lies the future of the consumerist world as we now know it.  How can war be avoided?  How can peace be attained?  He advocates the vital need for globalism, reckons that the short period of nation states is at an end.  The USA must abandon its fundamental idea of nationhood, they are an exceptionalist people from the beginning with the idea that God had raised them up.  Their attitude is a clog to what must happen in the world.  They must recognise their identity and help the world to that globalism vital to her survival.  A global empire, economic and political is the way forward.  The notions of personal rights has to be jettisoned, there is no such thing as each doing as they please, law is vital.

The European Union has shown the way to the possibilities of a union beyond race and individual nationhood, at least in part, in his estimation.  False models of nationhood, and markets and even empires have been, and will continue to be obstacles to the realisation of that global government that he sees as essential.  Those who are thoughtful Christians will note the Babel like doctrine that is set forth in these pages.  And will also discern how,  this is the only direction that the world can go apart from Christ Jesus.  A new understanding of the interdependence of all is called for and progress should be made towards it. The banking crisis of 2007 and the constant warring around nationhood and rights to sovereignty set the scene for the futility of things as they are.  It is fascinating to see how, some of what is in these pages is being both challenged and reaffirmed by events since 2010 when he wrote it.  Earlier on in the book he examines some of the significant time sequences of earlier watershed periods in European history in particular and indicates that in his estimation 2014 was just such a watershed period, ushering in some serious changes. So, here is a book for those wanting to gain some understanding of whither the world is thinking of going.
