David Wilkerson died in a car crash in 2011 after a long life of service to the Lord in Nth America particularly although his name became well known right across the Christian world because of his early ministry in New York City among addicts and gang members.  The Cross and the Switchblade was the book recording that early ministry and it is a moving testimony to the power of God in rescuing many from their bondages.  In 1987 he moved back to New York and pioneered a church in Times Square and this particular book where he teaches various aspects of the New Covenant comprises a series of messages he preached on that subject in the 1990’s.  He bears testimony to the fact that these messages arose out of God’s answer to his burden that God would grant him an understanding of the New Covenant, something he felt that he lacked and so, he was granted a revelation of the grace and power of God’s promises in His Son that far exceed the promises made to the people of the Old Testament.  Wilkerson shows that the New Covenant was forged in the Trinitarian relationships of the Father and Son and witnessed by the Holy Spirit.  The main terms of the promises are the redemption of those that believe through the Lord Jesus.  The chapters in this book develop these matters in an uncomplicated manner, there is a helpful absence of technical, scholarly and doctrinal analysis and the author gets to the heart of what Jesus came to do, and what the Father was doing through Him in the breaking of the power of sin through Christ and the end of the dominion of death.  God ‘cut’ a covenant with His own Son, ensuring freedom for all who are in Christ Jesus.  This is a book about the victory that is in Him, daily victory from all bondages of sin and addictions.  David Wilkerson had a prophetic note about his ministry, he was discerning as to the states of American society and where it is headed.  He was equally aware of the worldliness of the church and its tendency to miss the high calling that is in Christ Jesus, he never pulled his punches but landed his verbal blows with grace, passion and power and those who read this book will realize that some of the emphases current in the ministry of churches are missing the mark of what God has done and has specified in the terms of the covenant in force in these days.  People are falling short of those terms, ‘You shall know Me, your sins and iniquities I will remember no more’, I will write the laws of My Being upon your hearts” and so the clauses of God’s New covenant made with and through His Son with sinful mankind come with great richness.  This book is a setting forth of what is available in Christ Jesus and is a simple and worthwhile read.
